Three Ways Mobile Mechanics Charge to Come Out
We get this question on the phone every week. People expect one number. The honest answer is that it depends on how the mechanic bills. There are three common ways, and one hybrid.
| How They Bill | What You Pay to Get Them There | A Real Example | Watch For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat trip fee | A set fee just to show up. Labor and parts are extra. | Amounts vary a lot by mechanic and distance. Get the number in writing. | A trip fee stacked on top of a diagnostic fee. |
| Diagnostic fee | One fee covers the visit and finding the problem. | YourMechanic says diagnostic fees start at $130 and it charges no drive fee (YourMechanic support). | Whether the fee counts toward the repair. Ask. |
| Hourly, from arrival | The first hour of the labor rate. | Our posted mechanic rate is $150 an hour, and a mobile diagnostic is billed at that rate (our price list). | A one hour minimum on a ten minute fix. |
| Flat job price | Nothing extra. The visit is inside the job price. | Our full synthetic oil change for sedans is $99. Sedan brakes are $125 an axle. | Small jobs can cost a bit more than a shop to cover the drive. |
That last row matters. YourMechanic says it plainly on its own support page. Small services like oil changes may cost slightly more than local shops, because the mechanic has to earn enough to make the drive worth it (YourMechanic support). So "no trip fee" never means the drive is free. It means the drive is in the price.

Why the Drive Costs Anything at All
None of the pages ranking for this question show the math. Here it is, as a worked example.
The IRS sets a standard mileage rate that is meant to cover what it costs to run a vehicle for business. From July 1 through December 31, 2026, it is 76 cents a mile (IRS standard mileage rates). Say a mechanic drives 15 miles out to Winchester and 15 back. That is 30 miles, or $22.80 in vehicle cost by the IRS yardstick. That is before the time.
The time is the bigger part. The median pay for auto technicians was $24.34 an hour in May 2025, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A tech sitting in traffic on the way to you is not fixing a car. Somebody pays for that hour. The only question is which line of the bill it hides in.
Our take. A flat trip fee is not a rip off, and "free travel" is not a gift. Compare the total out the door, not the trip line.

Your California Rights Before the Mechanic Rolls
California gives you real protection here, and most price pages skip it. A California court self-help page lays it out (California court self-help, auto repair rights).
- Written estimate first. It has to show the total estimated price for parts and labor.
- Diagnosis can be its own estimate. A work order can show a price for diagnosis alone. That is how a visit to come out and diagnose should be written up.
- Your signature sets the cap. When you sign a work order, you owe up to the amount on it.
- Phone approvals get noted. If you okay more work by phone, the shop has to note it on the estimate and the invoice.
- The invoice shows a registration number. Every auto repair shop in California has to be registered with the state Department of Consumer Affairs.
So if a mobile mechanic will not put the visit price in writing before they come out, that tells you something.
Six Questions to Ask Before You Book
- Is there a trip fee, a diagnostic fee, or both?
- If I let you do the repair, does the diagnostic fee count toward it?
- Is there a minimum charge, like one full hour?
- Is my address inside your normal area, or is it extra?
- What does it cost if I cancel, and how late can I cancel?
- Can you text me the visit price in writing before you head out?
Cancellation is the one people forget. YourMechanic, for example, charges $150 if you cancel within 48 hours of the appointment (YourMechanic support).
When Paying Someone to Come Out Is the Wrong Move
A mobile visit is great for brakes, oil, batteries, starters, sensors and a no start in the driveway. It is the wrong call when the job needs a lift or runs for days. Engine swaps, transmissions and body work belong in a garage. We send any job that runs past a day to our garage at 325 Elmwood Ave in Hemet, and bring the car back done.
For a sense of scale, Thumbtack puts most mobile auto repair between $100 and $500 or more, depending on the job, the mechanic and where you live (Thumbtack). If your quote is far above that for a small job, ask why. If the job is big, get the written estimate first.

Mobile Mechanic Cost FAQ
How much do most mobile mechanics charge?
Most bill by the job or by the hour. Thumbtack puts typical mobile repairs between $100 and $500 or more. Our posted rate in Hemet is $150 an hour, with flat prices on common jobs like a $99 sedan oil change.
How much does it cost to call out a mechanic?
It depends on how they bill. Some charge a flat trip fee, some a diagnostic fee, and some start the hourly rate when they arrive. YourMechanic says it charges no drive fee and its diagnostics start at $130. Our mobile diagnostic is billed at $150 an hour.
Is a mobile mechanic cheaper than a shop?
Sometimes, not always. You skip the tow and the lost day. But small jobs can cost a little more than a shop, because the drive has to be paid for. Compare the total out the door.
Do I still pay if the mechanic can't fix it on the spot?
Usually yes, for the diagnosis. In California the work order can show a price for diagnosis alone, and you owe up to the amount you signed for. Get that number in writing before they come.
Do you charge more to come out to San Jacinto?
No. San Jacinto is right next door to our Hemet garage, and it gets the same prices as Hemet.
Can a mobile mechanic come out at night in Hemet?
Yes. We are open 9am to 8pm, 7 days a week, and we do emergency overnight repairs when you are stuck. Ask for the overnight price when you call.
